WHAT IS THIS CLASS ABOUT?

In each materials rotation (more below on what art materials we cover when), we'll focus on a particular medium/related media; I'll demonstrate techniques, and then ask kids to explore those ideas in their own artwork in whatever way feels good to them. I cannot tell you exactly what project your child will end up with on any given day, as it's largely dependent on their own imagination! For example, I've had sculpture classes during which - all at the same time - one child made a dragon, another made a hat, and another a building. They were all exploring the same sculptural idea in their own way.

  • SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER: Watercolors

  • NOVEMBER/DECEMBER: Drawing

  • JANUARY: Oil Pastels

  • FEBRUARY/MARCH: Paper (Collage, Paper Sculpture)

  • APRIL/MAY: Sculpture / Air-Dry Clay

  • JUNE: Cartooning / Simple Bookmaking

Most art rotations are 4-8 weeks long, and I’ll be demonstrating different technique or ways to think about the art materials each week. Kids will have a lot of agency in how to use them!

Making art is about exploration, and in this class I'm providing a safe and supportive space in which to facilitate learners' exploration of art materials and creative expression - and if that means that instead of making a collage, your 6-year-old is discovering how satisfying it can feel to tear a piece of paper into tiny little pieces, then I'm fine with that (hopefully they'll then use them in artwork some how, but if not, that's ok too).

This is not to say that every project will be completely open-ended, but I allow a lot of creative freedom in students' individual interpretations, and I'll never tell your child to stop making something in order to specifically do it 'my way.'

WHAT IS MY TEACHING STYLE?

  • I strive for an interactive classroom! I ask questions and value student input.

  • I use a document camera to ensure learners see my hands as I am demonstrating, but I’ll sometimes turn it off during work time so they only see my face, since I don't want them to feel like they have to copy me!

WHAT WILL LEARNERS DO IN A TYPICAL CLASS SESSION?

Our 45 minutes together usually works out to be 5-15 mins discussion/demo; 20-25 mins working; 5-10 wrap-up and sharing.

  • I'll introduce the day's idea. Sometimes we will begin by looking at and discussing artwork related to the topic at hand (please note, though, we won't be looking at famous artworks with the intent of creating our own version of them).

  • I'll demo, using a document camera to highlight my hands working.

  • Students will spend around 20-30 minutes working. We'll spend the last few minutes sharing* and reflecting on our work.

    • *Important note about sharing in class: I understand some kids are more shy than others and I have personally experienced what it’s like being pushed to share in class when I didn’t want to, so I never force sharing. I strive to create an environment where learners feel brave/comfortable enough to share when they feel ready!

WHAT ART SUPPLIES DO LEARNERS NEED?

The rough schedule is as follows, but is subject to change - things may shift depending on the class itself. Although I have a structure in mind, I remain open to the idea that student work or discussion in class may spark a whole new direction for exploration! I’ll make sure to let you know the full supply list when you register, but you don’t need “fancy” art materials.

GENERAL CLASS REMINDERS:

  • I require student cameras to be on for verification at the beginning of class, and prefer students keep them on as I cannot accurately gauge how well a student is following if all I see is a name in a black box!

  • Please ensure no adults appear in the camera view during class. Feel free to sit with your learner, but please adjust your camera so you’re not visible.

REGISTRATION & CANCELLATION POLICY:

This class is offered on a MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION model:

  • By enrolling, you pay for the first month and are then subscribed for a renewal every month (meaning, your credit card will be charged monthly on a recurring basis, and your student will remain enrolled, until you cancel).

  • Please note, pricing will remain consistent month-to-month; almost all months are 4 weeks long, but this can occasionally vary.

I need a minimum of 3 students to run the class.

  • If you are registering siblings, each learner must be enrolled separately.

  • Should I not reach that minimum, I will let you know within a week prior to class start, and refund your class fee.

  • Please understand that with limited class space available, when you register, you are holding a space in the class that another student could fill. As such:

    • For ongoing monthly classes, tuition is only refundable if cancellation is received 7 or more days prior to the course start, or the following month’s session.

    • I do not offer refunds, make-up classes or class credits for missed class sessions.

    • Class recordings will be available for those who miss class (so long as I have already met your learner).

  • Please review all of my class policies before registering.
