WHAT IS THIS CLASS ABOUT?
I’m creating a space for young artists to freely explore artistic processes! There is no 'right way' to make art in this class. It’s the opposite of a copy-me-exactly class, and I can’t tell you what your learners will have finished by the end of class - it’s largely learner-led! I can, however, tell you they’ll have fun making it!
WHAT WILL LEARNERS DO IN A TYPICAL CLASS SESSION?
After a quick greeting, I'll suggest an idea for the day which often includes a demonstration (eg, how to blend colors with crayons). We spend 15-20 minutes working. Young artists often share their work throughout the work time, but we will also take a moment at the end to share* with classmates should they want to! When artists share, I try to point out different aspects of their art, so they will learn art terms along the way.
*Important note about sharing in class: I understand some kids are more shy than others and I have personally experienced what it’s like being pushed to share in class when I didn’t want to, so I never force sharing. I strive to create an environment where learners feel brave/comfortable enough to share when they feel ready!
I use a document camera to ensure learners see my hands as I am demonstrating, but I’ll sometimes turn it off during work time so they only see my face, since I don't want them to feel like they have to copy me!
Occasionally, we may be inspired by something more specific - for example, one week some young learners had holiday light hanging behind them, and most of us ended up creating art with lots of circles in it! Young artists are free to either share their own ideas for the day's artwork, or diverge entirely and do their own thing - making artwork within community is a lovely practice! (Some learners show up and announce, "I am making a picture of a castle today," and that's always fine with me!)
Learners are always welcome to post their work to the classroom if they prefer to share that way!
Please reach out to me with any questions....I hope you will join me for this exploration!
WHAT WILL WE COVER & WHAT SUPPLIES DO LEARNERS NEED?
After you register you’ll receive more detailed information, but in brief, these are some of the materials we’ll worth with, in rotation:
DRAWING: lines, shapes, personality of lines, overlapping, blending, and more
drawing paper, at least 9x12/A4 - but larger preferred
drawing materials: markers, crayons, pencils, colored pencils
paint: watercolor pan set
WATERCOLOR: basics, wet on dry, wet on wet, resist, some special effects
watercolor pan set
a few different brushes
dedicated watercolor paper, at least 90lb (140lb is great)
SCULPTURE: different ways to hand-build with clay, creating 3d objects with pipe cleaners
Play-Doh (or similar) and/or Model Magic (or similar)
Pipe cleaners/chenille stems
PAPER: collage: making shapes & compositions, scissors use & gluing, sculptural uses of paper
quality construction paper - I suggest Tru-Ray
scissors (we’ll review proper/effective scissors use - but you can opt out if you’d rather your learner not use scissors in class)
a fat glue stick
scotch tape/cellotape (desk dispenser optional but recommended - that’s simplest for little hands)
GENERAL CLASS REMINDERS:
I require student cameras to be on for verification at the beginning of class, and prefer students keep them on as I cannot accurately gauge how well a student is following if all I see is a name in a black box!
Please ensure no adults appear in the camera view during class. Feel free to sit with your learner, but please adjust your camera so you’re not visible.
REGISTRATION & CANCELLATION POLICY:
This class is offered on a MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION model:
By enrolling, you pay for the first month and are then subscribed for a renewal every month (meaning, your credit card will be charged monthly on a recurring basis, and your student will remain enrolled, until you cancel).
I need a minimum of 3 students to run the class.
If you are registering siblings, each learner must be enrolled separately.
Should I not reach that minimum, I will let you know within a week prior to class start, and refund your class fee.
Please understand that with limited class space available, when you register, you are holding a space in the class that another student could fill. As such:
For ongoing monthly classes, tuition is only refundable if cancellation is received 7 or more days prior to the course start, or the following month’s session.
I do not offer refunds, make-up classes or class credits for missed class sessions.
Class recordings will be available for those who miss class (so long as I have already met your learner).
Please review all of my class policies before registering.
