WHAT IS THIS CLASS ABOUT?
This class is based on the idea that some truly fun and wonderful moments happen when kids allow their imaginations free reign without any pressure to create a particular thing.
Artists everywhere share a common trait: they experiment, make mistakes, and often find joy in the creative process. In this class, we won't follow prescribed artwork guidelines—each artist’s creations will be unique and unexpected! I use simple art prompts to inspire creativity, and we often end up weaving little stories about our artwork, which almost always leads to silliness and laughter. This is always one of my favorite half-hours of the week!
In addition to art prompts, I sometimes incorporate storytelling or wordplay prompts to help kids invent stories together, which can also serve as inspiration for their artwork.
Shy students or students who might find it more challenging to make art for fear of mistakes tend to drop their guard and enjoy themselves thoroughly when the pressure to produce has been lifted.
Finished artworks may not be "refrigerator-worthy"—this class prioritizes the process over the product, focusing on exploration and finding joy in the unexpected. Kids might not want to keep anything but the experience itself! However, the results can be quite entertaining.
This photo shows a young artist who kept creating for a long, long time after class was over and ended up making a huge book!
WHAT WILL LEARNERS DO IN A TYPICAL CLASS SESSION?
I give a prompt for kids to create a specific kind of mark or modify their paper in some way, or I might ask for a word or action that we can mix to spark a storyline.
Quick discussion of how that might inspire a project
Open work time and chatting for 20ish minutes
We may spend the last 5 minutes sharing* our creations, but sharing tends to happen organically throughout the class, so there may not be an official “sharing” time!
*Important note about sharing in class: I understand some kids are more shy than others and I have personally experienced what it’s like being pushed to share in class when I didn’t want to, so I never force sharing. I strive to create an environment where learners feel brave/comfortable enough to share when they feel ready!
I use a document camera to ensure learners see my hands as I am demonstrating, but I’ll sometimes turn it off during work time so they only see my face, since I don't want them to feel like they have to copy me!
WHAT ART SUPPLIES DO LEARNERS NEED?
We’ll primarily use simple art materials—markers, crayons, colored pencils, construction paper, and drawing paper. We’ll often incorporate scissors, glue sticks, and tape. Students are welcome to use other materials they enjoy, such as watercolor paints. I recommend having everything on standby if you register, and I’ll let you know in advance if I plan to introduce any unexpected materials.
Please reach out to me with any questions....I hope you will join me for this exploration!
GENERAL CLASS REMINDERS:
I require student cameras to be on for verification at the beginning of class, and prefer students keep them on as I cannot accurately gauge how well a student is following if all I see is a name in a black box!
Please ensure no adults appear in the camera view during class. Feel free to sit with your learner, but please adjust your camera so you’re not visible.
REGISTRATION & CANCELLATION POLICY:
This class is offered on a MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION model:
By enrolling, you pay for the first month and are then subscribed for a renewal every month (meaning, your credit card will be charged monthly on a recurring basis, and your student will remain enrolled, until you cancel).
I need a minimum of 3 students to run the class.
If you are registering siblings, each learner must be enrolled separately.
Should I not reach that minimum, I will let you know within a week prior to class start, and refund your class fee.
Please understand that with limited class space available, when you register, you are holding a space in the class that another student could fill. As such:
For ongoing monthly classes, tuition is only refundable if cancellation is received 7 or more days prior to the course start, or the following month’s session.
I do not offer refunds, make-up classes or class credits for missed class sessions.
Class recordings will be available for those who miss class (so long as I have already met your learner).
Please review all of my class policies before registering.
